Ashe juniper, 15”L x 14”W x 4.5”H. No longer available.
This bowl was carved from the base of a juniper (mountain cedar) that had been pushed in the 1970s. Each projection represents the base of a large limb growing from the base of the main trunk near the soil surface. White fungus had rotted the sapwood on the outside of the limbs, which I removed. However, most of the dark bark between these limbs remained. This is a beautiful example of how long-dead heartwood can still exhibit beautiful patterns of growth rings produced by lateral limbs radiating away from the main stem, and separated by inclusions of dark, rot-resistant bark.
