Cedar elm, 16”L x 6”W x 3.5”H.

I carved this shallow bowl from a limb of a large tree that had recently been toppled by a strong wind. This section of the limb was swollen and drew my attention. Upon cutting into the branch, I found that the wood had been attacked by insects and fungi, and large areas had been discolored by the tree’s defensive reaction to the attack. I particularly like the dramatic contrast of the light-colored sap wood, the darker brown heart wood, that the almost black reaction wood.
