Long pecan bowl with spalting, 32”L x 8”W x 2.5”H.

This long shallow bowl was carved from a large limb that broke off an huge pecan tree during a wind storm. The rough slab cut from the limb had to dry for several months before I could carve and sand it into its final flat-shaped form. I particularly like the interwoven areas of darker heart wood and lighter sap wood with intricate lines of dark “spalting” produced by heart rot fungi. In addition, the piece has and unusual reddish area produced by another type of fungus, as well as dark traces of long-dead twigs that grew from the main limb.
