I carved this piece in the 1990s for my mother-in-law. The left and right halves are the remains of heart wood from the bases of two large trunks that had grown together. Heart rot had destroyed most of the massive core of the tree, leaving only the rot-resistant center of the core and major root growing from it. This is a good example of a large core in the final throes of destruction by fungi and insects. That we were all so resistant!
