Ashe juniper, 12”L x 10”W x 12”H.
This sculptural piece was carved from the core of a large Ashe juniper (mountain cedar) that had been bulldozed and pushed into a pile in the 1970s. The cross sections of the bases of several stems and roots are seen emerging from the core, usually surrounded by beautiful radial patterns of growth rings. The long curving gaps dividing these bases were originally filled with bark, some of which remains. Wood boring insect larvae have left their tunnels on all sides of the piece. Like similar core sculptures in the collection, this piece can be periodically turned to be viewed from different perspectives.
