Post oak, 25”L x 8”W x 3”H.

This long centerpiece was carved from a long-dead post oak trunk about 12 inches in diameter. The sap wood had been consumed by white rot and was removed. The tunnels were created by wood boring insect grubs, and the very beginning of dark colored heart rot can be seen on one end. Linear cracks produced by shrinkage after the tree died were filled with oak-tinted wood filler, and the piece was finished with multiple coats of tung oil.
