Ashe juniper, 13”L x 11.5"W x 4"H.

This bowl was carved from the base of a long-dead juniper (mountain cedar) tree. All the sap wood had rotted away, leaving only heart wood in this piece. The interesting radial cracks appeared as the wood dried and contracted. The radial growth rings of the main trunk are clearly visible, and the small circular impressions and linear traces visible on the inside and outside of the bowl are the remains of small limbs that were produced early in the life of the tree, then died and were surrounded by the growing sapwood before, with increasing age, it was converted to heart wood.
